7 SEO Copywriting Tips To Boost Your Website Traffic

Developing high ranking content is easy with our 7 SEO copywriting tips.

It is no secret that it takes time for your online content to rank with search engines like Google. If you’ve already optimised your on page SEO, then it’s time to assess your content! That’s right, content plays a significant role in driving organic traffic to your website.

To begin SEO copywriting, you first need a topic and set of keywords in mind, these are necessary for Google to translate your content and rank it on their results page. Aside from the technical aspects of SEO, your main focus should be on writing content for your target audience.

Not sure where to start? That’s where GDR can help! We’ve put together a list of 7 SEO copywriting tips to boost your website traffic that you can start using today.

1) Quality v.s. Quality - why not both?

Quality counts, but quantity is still important. Google will penalise sites with minimal content that don’t provide valuable and related information for readers. It’s important to find the balance between quality and quantity. Developing good quality content that people are searching for does rank better, though instead of a huge lump of text, incorporating an eye-catching layout that is comprised of short paragraphs, bullet points, infographics, videos, and images that help to strengthen your content will encourage your visitors to keep reading.

Don’t forget to ask the obvious when developing your content ‘what solution am I giving to my readers?’ and ‘am I speaking directly to them?’ Using content that gives a solution, and content that is easily understandable along with powerful words such as ‘boost’, ‘quick’ and ‘easy’ will help ensure your content achieves the objectives you want it to.

2) Target the right keywords for effective SEO content

This is often one of the most overlooked strategies when writing content. When you create content, the first step is finding your topic, followed by what you want to be searchable for. After you have those two pieces of information – you can begin searching for relevant keywords. It is helpful to think of what readers will search for when they reach for Google.

A lot of research should also go into your keywords, with the combination of competitiveness and search volume – both must be considered – otherwise your SEO will fail. There are some great SEO tools, such as Keyword Planner by Google and SEM rush. They help with relevant keywords and planning your content.

One helpful tip that we will let you in on is: target location. When you’re conducting your SEO research, incorporating locations that you wish to target gives your content a boost in searchability, and ranking. Also by aiming at a specific audience the quality of your website traffic will improve.

3) Making Title Tags great again (with Keywords)

This seems simple… or is it? Your headline is one of the most important ranking factors on your page. Why? Because it is the first thing that your targeted audience will look at, and it’s what urges people to click thru to your site. So, if your headline does not consist of keywords in the title, then Google will not be able to find relevancy between your keyword and the headline, making it much more difficult for your readers to find you. It is also a good idea to replicate this process for the URL slug. Keep it short, simple, readable and relevant.

Hint: Put the keywords at the beginning of the title tag rather than the end, and to avoid being truncated by Google, (because they can do that, and they will) keep your headline less than 70 characters.

4) Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords

You’re probably thinking, what are you talking about Willis? What are LSI keywords? Well they are synonyms or related words to your main keyword, for example, if you’re keyword is “SEO agency,” you would include LSI keywords such as “SEO management agency” or “SEO marketing strategy” as these keywords will help Google further understand what your page is about. These LSI keywords are very closely related to the keywords that your readers and users are searching for, so when brainstorming a list of these keywords, think of what others might search for in the Google search bar (another hint, if you type in your keyword in Google, in the drop down bar, it will give you a list of things related to what you’re searching, so that’s a start!)

Target location is also relevant for LSI keywords!

5) Spelling and grammar, check

When we talk about user-friendliness and readability a major factor in SEO copywriting is spelling, and whether you like to admit it or not, they matter in your content. Why? Well simply because every search engine, especially Google aims to deliver content which is useful and valuable to the readers. It’s all part of the user experience.

If your website is filled with spelling and grammatical errors, your readers will have a poor experience, and will leave your site and find one similar, but easier to comprehend! This is where it is vital to place yourself in your reader’s shoes; what would you do if you were on a website that has numerous spelling and grammar errors? Thought so.

So how do you improve the users experience? Proofread. Proofread till you can proofread no more. You should also use catchy headings and subheadings (which also include keywords) to help readers skim through your content to find what is relevant to them.

6) Effective online marketing; a Call-To-Action (CTA)

Your content should always be engaging, and a CTA is a fantastic way to increase engagement, and in effect it is the best avenue to tell your readers what to do. A call to action isn’t always ‘buy now’ or ‘download here’ It can be much more relationship based, such as ‘ask me a question’ or ‘leave a suggestion’. This way you will build a better affiliation and attract more traffic to your site. You can also ask them questions, and seek their opinion and insight, they will feel much more valued, and it will give you an opportunity to direct what you want them to do next.

If used effectively, you will see that these CTA’s can turn into leads, which then generate sales! #Winning.

7) Quality and authoritative – Link it

Data such as; charts, references, statistics, graphs in your content to support your statements, and show the reader that you know your stuff. This is key to compelling and engaging content.

You could also look for the opportunity to link to other quality/authority sites, as not only will it be relevant for your users, but it assists in building a relationship with people within your industry, and in turn they might link to your site as well! This is called link building (earning); and the first step is (you guessed it) quality content!  As a result, it will boost your rank in Google as the number of links directing to your page is a major element that Google uses to measure authority.  Another tip is to link your content to other relevant content on your website or blog to drive more traffic!

Final thought

A few things to remember: don’t just write for Google, but write for your readers too. Also:

  • Avoid using complicated sentences, and proofread.
  • Choose the most relevant keywords, and LSI keywords.
  • Be personal! Talk to your readers as if you’re talking to a friend!
